A single evening of interactive multicultural music, film, and visual art

Microcinema International has teamed up with the Cultural Office of the French Consulate in Houston, to produce the SECOND ANNUAL FETE de la MUSIQUE et de la LUMIERE, a collaborative, interactive event that blends music, film, and the visual arts. An indoor/outdoor event, the FETE will feature visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, DJs, and VJs under one roof for a unique evening of entertainment.

Featured artists include:

The artists of Commerce Street Artist Warehouse will present a lamp show as well as works on the wall, including light follies, film projections, and other light generating effects. The SPACE CITY GAMELAN GROUP will provide live musical interludes throughout the evening. Gamelon is the Indonesian word for orchestra and the group is comprised of percussion instruments including hanging gongs, pot gongs, metallophones, and chime instruments.

MICROCINEMA INTERNATIONAL will project short films and images throughout the event with live feed VJ mixing by CHRISTOPHER KELLER. Microcinema will feature a selection of musically-oriented films selected the LONDON/PARIS group CINEFEEL as well as others. DJ Music will be provided by KWI-J.

The FETE de la MUSIQUE and the FAITES DE LA LUMIERE is a worldwide grass-roots art event organized by communities throughout France and worldwide.

We are participating here in Houston and we would like for you to join in the fun. FAITES DE LA LUMIERE is a French play-on-words meaning both "Do your own Light" and "Light Party".

This event intends to alter the daily routine (even for a day) with amateur musicians, shadow and light. This festive process of production, sounds and visual art broadcasting meets street festivals with the internet and local TV. This event is based on an active co-operation between inhabitants and local associations. In order to organize this FETE, synergy is created between the local people, performers, local associations, traders and also local communities. Everyone takes an active part in the transformation of the street/venue.

These forms of expression are based on " do-it-yourself " artistic performances : -sing public places.-musical impromptues -using facades as a screen in order to show fixed or unfixed, real or abstract, classical or experimental, silent or non-silent pictures and shows of dance or theatre. -using new technology in order to televise and exchange the event between the different places. -involving inhabitants via an illuminated windows competition or via involvement in the association. -getting different partners of the different events together.

FETE DE LA MUSIQUE has been organized worldwide since 1982. From 1998 to 1999, four FAITES DE LA LUMIERE took place in many villages and cities of France, different European countries, and even in Canada and Greenland. All these energies were gathered into a Federation FAITES DE LA LUMIERE which include Paris, London, Montreal, Chicago, Madrid, Lyon, Melbourne, Marseilles, St. Louis, Houston, San Francisco and others…
